The actual advice in that xkcd comic are to use mnemonics that are easy for you to remember and generate password as long as you can remember them. Those are basic password advice anywhere, and will always stand true (even the quoted Schneier's method uses these two basic facts). Indeed, the comic makes use of common English words, but your implementation doesn't have to be, nor did the comic implies that you should xkcd's password generation scheme requires the user to have a list of 2048 common words (log 2 (2048) = 11). For any attack we must assume that the attacker knows our password generation algorithm, but not the exact password. In this case the attacker knows the 2048 words, and knows that we selected 4 words, but not which words. - But XKCD's argument is not primarily about mathematics. It's about how to create the most secure systems possible in light of human imperfections. I've been pretty fortunate that my role at OkCupid allows me significant lateral freedom for research, and the ability to implement strong security controls as the direct result of this research. As a good example, OkCupid stopped aging out employee passwords by policy a couple. To increase security, we can always add more words. I know the xkcd-style password scheme is fairly secure and easy to remember, especially if you increase the length, and it's simple enough to understand and verify. Most programmers can audit the source code of this website to ensure security. Another major part of the reason is that a lot of the similar websites fail to generate.
- BUT, your password length now becomes effectively 4 characters e.g. correct = 1. horse = 2. battery = 3. staple =4. So 4 common dictionary words used as a password, such as correcthorsebatterystaple, offers around 5,000 to the power of 4 combinations , or around 6×10^14. EDIT: We're not sure how XKCD got to 2^44, as a brute force of that.

- As this XKCD comic points out, complex password rules actually drive us to create predictable, easy-to-guess passwords (password1! anybody?) or find other ways to make things easier on ourselves, e.g., reusing passwords across sites or saving them in spreadsheets or sticky notes. In practice, all those rules had made it easier for the bad guy, and harder—and less secure—for the user
